Over the last three years I’ve been experimenting with a low-carb diet and have been quite pleased with the results both in my energy levels and body composition.
However, I’ve always felt that I’ve been eating too much protein.
I do want to spend some time figuring out my ideal daily protein amount but found this new study interesting: Protein, A Nutrient in Focus.
Here’s a quote from Charle’s Poliquin’s recent post, New Research That Current Dietary Protein Requirements are Not Sufficient:
A growing body of literature suggests that current dietary protein recommendations may not be sufficient to promote optimal muscle health in all populations.
The current recommendations for protein intake are based primarily on the nitrogen balance method, of which the limitations are well known. More recent methods for determining protein requirements use stable isotope-based techniques and suggest that the current recommendations are underestimated.
